Ear pain can be a debilitating and uncomfortable experience. There are many different factors that can contribute to ear pain, and identifying the cause is important to receive the appropriate treatment.

Ear Infections

Man with ear pain

Ear infections are a common cause, especially in children. These are typically caused by inflammation and pressure from the buildup of fluid in the middle ear. Symptoms can include fever, difficulty hearing and a feeling of fullness or pressure in the ear.

Eustachian Tube Dysfunction

The Eustachian tube connects the middle ear to the back of the throat, allowing air to flow in and out of the middle ear. If the Eustachian tube becomes blocked or doesn’t function properly, it can cause ear pain, a feeling of fullness, and difficulty hearing.

Wax Buildup

Earwax helps to protect the ear canal from bacteria and other foreign particles. However, a buildup of earwax can cause pain, a feeling of fullness and even hearing loss.

Temporomandibular Joint Disorder (TMJ)

TMJ disorder is a condition that affects the jaw joint and can cause pain and discomfort in the ear, as well as headaches and facial pain. TMJ can be caused by teeth grinding, misaligned teeth or trauma to the jaw.

Trauma or Injury

Any trauma or injury to the ear can cause pain and discomfort. This can include things like a blow to the ear, a perforated eardrum or a foreign object stuck in the ear.

Sinus Infections

Sinus infections can cause pain and pressure in the ears, as well as congestion and a runny nose. This is because the sinuses and ears are connected through small tubes that can become blocked when the sinuses are inflamed.

Tinnitus

Tinnitus is a condition that causes a ringing, buzzing or humming sound in the ear, and it can be accompanied by pain. Tinnitus can be caused by exposure to loud noises, ear infections, or age-related hearing loss.
