At Virginia Ear Nose and Throat, our therapists do vestibular and balance testing to diagnosis patients for a broad variety of in balance, sensation of spinning, and headache related disorders that reduce balance. We use information of accessory symptoms (such as ringing in the ears), hearing test results, and orthopedic history to come to treatment diagnoses. This process often resolves patients’ symptoms as a stand-alone treatment but is also an important step in the diagnostics that the ENT will be performing.

To practice in Virginia, all providers and assistants must be licensed by the Virginia Board of Physical Therapy. All our therapists are licensed, highly-trained and experienced. Additionally, our team specializes in vestibular rehabilitation, TMJ therapy and dry needling therapy. Learn more about our team.

Our Total Balance Center is home to our state-of-the-art gym. Combined with our therapists’ knowledge and experience, we create individualized treatments for each patient. The type of exercises you will complete depends on your condition but include strength, endurance, mobility and balance training. We may also combine what is considered more traditional treatments with specialized therapies such as functional dry needling therapy.

It is important to follow all of your therapist’s instructions, both during and in between your sessions. Completing your at-home exercises exactly as instructed ensures that your treatment stays on track, your condition improves and your results are long-lasting.

The full length of your treatment depends on your individual condition and goals. However, most patients will notice a significant improvement within the first couple of weeks. Recovery can feel slow at times. Healing the body is a gradual process rooted in anatomy and rushing the process can lead to re-injury.

Dress comfortably due to the different types of testing that occur. If you are taking Dramamine or meclizine for your dizziness, please stop taking it 24 hours prior to your appointment. If you are unable to make it to your appointment, please call us at 804-484-3701 to cancel your appointment. Nearly all patients are able to drive after their appointment, however, should you have any concern please feel free to bring someone along with you for assistance.

The most appropriate way to diagnosis and treat dizziness is to perform a battery of tests which can be done by our vestibular therapist. It’s very uncommon for an ENT to administer these tests. The Vestibular Therapists at Virginia ENT have specialized knowledge of how to interpret the tests in conjunction with listening to your symptoms. The ENT is sometimes a part of this workable plan but the testing done by our Vestibular team would need to be conducted first.
